The JMARS client is designed to be small, but it can accumulate a lot of data from the server with heavy use. The minimum recommended system requirements are:
- Java Runtime 1.5 or later (required)
- A 24 bit video sub-system (required)
- Java Advanced Imaging Toolkit (required for Numeric Map Layer and 3D Layer)
- DSL, Cable, T-1 or better network connection (128Kbps) (recommended)
- 512MB of RAM (recommended)
- Display capable of a resolution of 1024x768 (recommended)

There are a few options depending on the type of operating system you have:
- Java WebStart - Install through your browser (works on most up to date operating systems.)
- Windows Installer - For Windows 2000, XP, and Vista.
- Mac Installer - For Mac OS 10
- Linux Installer - For 32-bit Linux operating systems, or 64-bit systems with 32-bit compatibility libraries
- jmars.jar - The JMARS core program without an installer or prerequisite libraries (advanced users only)
